"It's hard to keep something alive all day with your boob"

...so says Nadine. These little ones are so in need of their bigger human friends. It makes me think about biology class. The R and the K types of reproduction strategies, although I don't really remember it all it goes like this. If we were spiders we would lay eggs to have hundreds of babies and leave them to fend for themselves hoping that a few would survive. Animals more like ourselves have less young and invest more in their upbringing. This was taken to the extreme with humans. We have such big brains and heads that we have to pop our young out earlier than they are "ready".

Okay, back to this keeping something alive with your boob. Its a lot of work. Hats off to moms.

Neeli is 2 and 1/2 months old and this is what he likes. He wakes up in the morning to stretch his arms over his head and his forehead wrinkles up. Then he usually smiles. He spends the morning in his bouncy lounge chair and kicks and smiles, full body smiles. He switches back and forth from his "boo lip" to smiles but mostly he is content.

His favorite place is his changing table, he can't help but to smile when on the changing table. He looks at us through the mirror on the wall rather than straight at us. He also really enjoys his baths, never squawking, but instead just being content enjoying water poured over his body.

He likes to be kissed by mom and makes his lips in to an "o" and curls his tongue.

Mom likes to dance with him on her shoulder. He lifts his head up looking around as she steps around in circles.

He usually goes right to sleep when we put him down around 9:00 or at least doesn't mind to hang out alone until he dozes off. He usually sleeps until 3:00 or 4:00am. Putting him in a carrier is a sure way to get him to nap.

All in all he is a lot like me. I like kissing mommy, having warm water poured on me, bouncy lounge chairs are quite alright, and dancing and naps are two of my favorite things to do when I can find the time to do them.

Now if only Nadine's boobs could keep me alive I'd really have it made.

Name voting results

Here are the results from those of you who helped name our baby. We "tried" using Kolbie in the hospital but it didn't work and he almost was called Cale (like the leafy green). Now he will have to live with Neeli and get used to saying "no, it's Neeeeli" or just take on Eli which wouldn't be bad.
1. What name should we give our baby? Check the names you like.

Delivery

Ten days after the due date we check in to have an induction of labor. Cervidil in the evening and if needed the stronger potocin the following morning. Sutter Maternity Center is a great place to have a baby. We check in, set up our stereo, hang some lights, put our food in the fridge, have dad's bed made up and settle in for a movie to keep our minds placated.

3:30 am August 4. Nadine wakes up in active labor, the cervidil did everything and more. Doula Teri shows up and were off. Baby on its way.

6:30 am August 4. Nadine is laboring in the warm bath and goes from 4 to 9 centimeters dialated in 2 hours!

8:30 am August 4. 9 1/2 centimeters dialated and pushing begins. Teri and nurse Gail are great suggesting all different positions to push in. Two hours later baby hasn't progressed much cause the baby's head is transverse, not in the ideal position to make it through the birth canal.

10:30 am August 4. OB on call comes in to turn the baby's head and Nadine continues to push.

1:30 pm August 4. OB comes back in to find that the baby's head has moved back in to the transverse position and states "this baby is not going to fit". He mentions the vacuum but the baby's head still hadn't made it in the birth canal even after 5 hours of pushing.

2:00 pm August 4. 9 lb 1 ounce, 21 inch baby boy is born via C-section. We were all surprised by his large size especially the 15.1 inch circumference head which is larger than the normal range.

Saturday to Wednesday we stay at Sutter. We loved it! Great organic food menu and room service, friendly nurses who answered all our newbie questions, lactation specialists, and great care for mom and babe.
