Started in Salem, OR at the Capitol. Wasn't the crazy crowds they predicted. Drove right up, free parking in front, we toured around the building and heard a talk about the eclipse from an astronomer from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We met a senator who was at the talk and invited us for a behind the scenes tour for the Capitol. Real nice guy. When back in the senate offices we met the other Senator who was in town. He happened to be a Star wars geek and gave us a tour. Fast forwarding past slamming gavels and lots of political tricks and history we landed in the little town of Jefferson at a friends house. Next morning walked up Cemetery Hill to experience a spooky eclipse. Pretty incredible - crazy light show, shadow snakes rolling on the ground and the snap into to TOTALITY!
On to Olympia for more friends and fun in the city. Ended WA with a trip to Mount St Helens. INCREDIBLE actually more rare than an Total Eclipse of the sun. This geological event started with the largest landslide ever recorded by humans. See more on that story.
Leaving behind the greatness of the volcano we ended back in Portland for a great dinner, ice cream and another incredible Star wars display, this time a Lego collection causally displayed on a store front.
So how do you end a collectable-starwars-volcanic-totaleclipseofthesun-withfreinds-topped-with-good-food-like-watermelon-mint-feta-salad??
